Pollaiolo’s ladies, the Florentine Renaissance in Milan

The two most prominent names of Florentine Renaissance on exhibition at Poldi Pezzoli Museum in Milan. Antonio and Piero del Pollaiolo, famous painters of the fifteenth century, are the protagonist of The ladies by the Pollaiolo brothers: works from a great Reinassance workshop, until 16 february 2015 at Poldi Pezzoli.  A unique opportunity to discover the great talent and the many interests of the two brother’s artistic activity. Antonio and Piero, known as ‘Pollaiolo’ after the trade of their father, a poultry merchant at the old market in Florence, were not only gifted painters: Antonio was above all a goldsmith, he also created chiseling jewels, sculptures and engravings as well as drawings. Piero was mainly a painter: he was successfully commissioned by public and private clients, collaborating frequently with Antonio.The ladies by the Pollauolo brothers: works from a great Reinassance workshop is a journey through the genius of the two brothers. “Portrait of a Lady” by Piero del Pollaiolo, the most iconic painting in the house museum’s collection, is for sure one of the greatest masterpiece of Florentine portrait work of the second half of the 15th centuryThe woman unique and distinctive profile is for the first time showcased alongside the portraits of her other ‘three sisters’, also attributed to Pollaiolo brothers, on loan from the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.  Besides the four magnificent ladies, the exhibit shows us their prowess in small and medium size drawings, highlighting the differences between the two artists. Drawings as well as bronze and terracotta sculptures, are on display together with parade shields and cork and silver crucifixes.
