Milan celebrate Symbolism

After “ Alfons Mucha and the Art Nouveau Atmospheres ”, from February 3rd Palazzo Reale in Milan inaugurates “Symbolism. European Art from the Belle Époque to the Great War”, a major exhibition in tone with the museum program dedicated to art between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Promoted by the City Council and produced by 24 ORE Cultura – Arthemisia Groups, this exhibition – curated by Michel Draguet – propose more than 150 artwork pieces between paintings, sculptures and an exceptional selection of graphics, representing some of Symbolism’s most interesting output. All art pieces – drawn from public and private collections across Europe – evocates Symbolism ideal aspiration of achieving unitary effect in creating absolute art. Through 18 thematic sections, the exhibition evokes the oneiric atmosphere that Symbolists aimed to in order to transcend appearances.

Visitors will be able to admire Khnopff visionary dimensions, Klinger futuristic iconographic inventions and the demonic representations of both Odilon Redon and Alfred Kubin, among with Gustave Moreau’s myth reproductions, the feeling of decadence in Musil artwork and the opposed vitality of Hodler, as well as the avant-garde Les Nabis artist group suggestions, while interpretations of love and the magic of adornment will be represented with art pieces from Italians Giovanni Segantini and Galileo Chini.

Symbolism has always been consistently tied to the symbols and themes of mythology corresponding to great universal values of life, death, love and sin, and to the constant exploration of the mysteries of nature and of human existence, themes which are still relevant and fascinating nowadays.
